Project 55, Donation. Cost: US$28,800 – Excavating a 3m diameter well, minimum 8m deep, installation of 2 water pumps and a pipeline to provide Shurkhok village with 180 Households (in DURA) 3.5 km away access to clean Drinking Water access to safe drinking water from a well 3.5 km away.

Shurkhok Village (400 years old)

Pre-project Situation

The 180 households of Shurkhok village face a critical challenge in accessing safe water. At present, families must fetch water from the Panj River, located 3.5 kilometers away. This water is unsafe, containing microorganisms that cause infectious diseases. Children are most affected, as they often drink it without boiling, leading to frequent cases of diarrhea.

Seasonal conditions further worsen the situation. In summer, melting glaciers fill the river with mud, making the water unusable. In winter, the river freezes, and fetching water becomes dangerous and nearly impossible. These conditions place the health and safety of the community at constant risk.

Water Well Source

Expected benefit

The project will benefit the villagers in following ways.

Health and Safety

  • The well will filter river water, providing safe drinking water.
  • Reduced exposure to unsafe water will significantly lower infectious diseases, especially diarrhea among children.
  • Pumps and pipes will eliminate the risks associated with fetching water from the river during hazardous conditions.

Time and Efficiency

  • Reliable water delivery across 3.5 km will save families considerable time and effort.
  • Parents will have more time to prepare meals and care for their children.
  • Children will gain more time for studies and constructive activities.

Sanitation and Quality of Life

  • Consistent access to clean water will enable villagers to practice hygiene and sanitation at a higher standard.
  • Improved living conditions will strengthen overall community well-being and resilience.
