Pre-project Situation

In summer:

During the Spring months, the villagers collect water from a creek fed by the melting snow, from up a mountain valley, 700 meters away.

However, later on in summer, this same creek becomes very dirty, as shown below.

In winter:

During severe frosts in the cold season, the water in the stream freezes up.

During those times, the villagers have to go to Shogdara river to collect water in bottles and then carry the water-filled bottles back to the village on foot.

This task uses up more than half of the day.  Also, in the cold weather, they cannot use any donkey and that makes the task of water collection even more difficult.

Also, after the water is brought in and before they can drink it, they have to leave the water in the Sun for 2-3 hours for all the silt to settle down to the bottom of the containers. Even then, the water is not hygienic.

This above described problem also affects the school and the hospital in the area.

Feedback from the village

Feedback received from: Chief of the Rijez village Davlatyor (mobile ph: 931562334), GBAO, Tajikistan after, the completion of the project below:

Project:   Donated assistance in providing a pipeline access to safe clean drinking water

How has this pipeline helped you in saving time for other activities?

In winter: Each household (18 households in total) spend around 3 hours for bringing water from the river to the house. As it is dangerous during winter to send children for water, mostly women go for bringing water to the house. Now they will have more time for spending with the children. Now it is much more easier for women, to wash dishes and clothes. They do not save water for future use,  but use as much as needed to clean dishes and wash clothes.

In spring:   Spring in our areas is like winter in other areas, it is very cold. Having the water by our houses during spring will have the same advantages as during winter, mentioned above.

In summer: In summer the river water that we used before gets dirty and muddy, which causes a lot diarrhea among the children. Having clean water will help to improve the sanitation in the village and at the same time people will have some additional time to use for house chores and farming.

In Fall: During fall people are very loaded with harvesting the animal fodder and bringing back the livestock from the animal sheds. People are now having additional time to be spent for these purposes.

How does the water from the pipeline taste?-  It has a very pleasant taste.

Does the taste change in different seasons – it tastes the same all the seasons

Does it have any color – No

Does it have any odor – No

Do use any water from this for washing? – Yes

(if YES) does the water leave any stains on the clothes? – No

Is the water hard (hard water = soap and water do not create many foams (like when you are washing hands or showering) – No

Any water can contain bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved salts and alkaline level, etc. So testing it regularly to see how safe it is to drink is important.

When water tastes bad, smells bad or has a color, it indicates that water needs to be tested by a specialist from a nearby government office.

can you plan to get water tested, once a year by a government specialist?
-Yes

Additionally, When we give you a TDS meter, can you plan for your own health to test the tap water regularly with this device during each month?  – Yes, of course

This device is to test for other dissolved salts. And from the readings you get, you can judge how safe is the water.

To judge the results, use the table below:

According to the World Health Organization:

TDS level less than 300 mg/litre is considered as excellent,

                 between 300 and 600 mg/liter is good,

                 between 600-900 is fair,

                 between 900 – 1200 is poor and

more than 1200 mg/liter is unacceptable

Duaa from the Village Chief:

Unfortunately, due to COVID we do not have joint Namaz in our village, we would of make a joint prayer for the donors of the project, especially the deceased family members. But each of us are making dua in the name of Sherbanu, Hasham, Naseem, Aly and Rahemat, may God welcome them into the paradise and grant them eternal peace. May the nazrana of the other family members, especially Shiraz, Shahida, Mithoo and Nabat be accepted.
